Week 9 Thing 23- I DID IT !!

What a journey this was!! I have taken in so much in the past weeks that my head is still spinning with ideas.
The last discovery was with Copyright and Creative Commons. This is a great site that offers information on protecting creative materials with flexibility. You can choose the kind of license you need. The video " A Fair(y) Use Tale" explains the copyright laws by using Disney clips(legally).

Week 9 Thing 20-21-22 ebooks, Podcasting and YouTube

This lesson included looking at YouTube. I discovered several sites from children's authors that I will incorporate into my lessons. Reading Rocket offers many. I downloaded a few to share with my students. I found several videos that would make good inservice material as well. Not sure if I'm ready to create my own YouTube, but I find them fun to watch and many useful. I also looked at TeacherTube.

Podcasting is another tool that I find interesting. I looked at EPN and the Ipods site. I was not successful in pulling up the other sites from the links provided. I did download from NPR, one of Daniel Pinkwater's session. I will attempt to include on my blog.

In researching the ebooks, I found it to be not so interesting. I'm not sure why ? World ebook Fair, Guttenburg and LibriVOx were the sites I tried. LibriVox was not available because of archival issues. I realize that this is just another tool to bring information to us in the 21st century, but being an elementary teacher, the idea of ebooks just doesn't seem cozy enough to me.

Week 8 Thing 18-19 continued

Today I explored ZOHO Writer. This is a great idea- Having all these word and text tools in one place. Especially for myself and others who travel between buildings. I am hoping to use this format to create an electronic newsletter to our teachers. I will definitely come back to this site and explore some more. This was so easy to import from their site on to blogger.com

Week 8 Thing 18-19

This week I added a great "Tool" to my bookbag. It is called LibraryThing. It is a great organizer for books and other media. I will use this for cataloging my own personal books that I use in our libraries. Perhaps this will help me remember where they are as well. LOL
Here is my link so far. http://www.librarything.com/catalog/bookberry

It was interesting to see how many others included the same titles as I.

Week 7 Thing 16-17

This lesson came at just the right time. I'm collaborating with a 6th grade teacher and her Book Club groups. I have created a wiki to enhance the students experiences while reading their novels.
I will introduce the "Wiki" to the students by using a PowerPoint that I found on one of the blogs during our class time and the teacher will follow up by posting questions and discussion topics. Not sure if our technology can handle it, but we will try.

I can see this wiki being valuable as a book sharing tool as well.

In exploring the suggested sites, I have found many activities that would be great to incorporate into my lessons. Such as using the trading cards to enhance my third graders animal reports.
Using Flickr to jazz up my electronic newsletter to the staff.

I am experiencing difficulties in adding to the PA curriculum site. I will try again later

Week 6 Thing 15

After spending many hours on this class, reading articles and blogs on the future of our libraries and how students learn, I feel assured that technology will be ever wired into our learning and our lives. The question is how does one keep up?
It is all exciting, it is fast paced and always changing. Just when you feel comfortable with one "tool" or way of teaching students, another evolves.

My goal is to learn at least 2 new "tools" this school year and incorporate them into my lessons. It is like my job at the three elementary libraries, you do the best that you can and realize that you may never catch up! BUT it is fun trying !!

Week 6 Thing 14

Technorati is a tool that I spent some time with. Just exploring, reading several articles and blogs on technology. I liked how one has access to photos and videos as well as the written work. I now understand how and why "tagging" works. It brings everything together for you.
I would like to come back to this site to research more. Not sure if this would be used in our elementary schools.

Week 6 Thing 13

Tagging and delicious- This was a great discovery. Finally a way to keep all those bookmarks organized so I can find them again without running down through my folders under my favorites!
I have signed on to delicious. I plan on going through all my sites and tagging them and cleaning up my folders. I can see where this is a timesaver.
I can't wait to share this fun free tool.

Week 5 Thing 12

I used the search rollyo for finding information on Library Skills. I'm always searching for something new and different. I was impressed at the hits that came up. I will definately come back to this tool and perhaps use it for my research projects through out the year. Creating a one stop link for my students.

Week 5 Thing 11

In exploring many of the award winning Web 2.0 sites, I have found that there is no limit on what can be done. These sites can really be useful and exciting to explore. I have signed up for a few to check out when I have more time.
Librarything, I have shared with my principal and a few parents that wanted to organize their own personal library.
I have used a couple of the travel sites for comparing fares. I have also shared Writeboard with a fellow teacher as well.

Week 5 Thing 10

Playing was fun with the ImageChef, but time sure escaped me. I was exploring all kinds of possibilities with this cool tool. Making posters to bookmarks to adding interest to my website. This tool would be great for scrapbooking as well. There is just not enough time for play!!!

Week 4 Thing 8 - 9

Tonight I viewed the video clip about RSS and newsreaders from Google Reader. I have seen the RSS symbol many times and did not realize what a helpful tool this really is. Newsreaders not only save you time, by not having to surf and surf, but it also helps to organize your favorites without all the bookmarks. I like how you can pick and choose what you want to read rather than scrolling through page after page.
Trying to come up with some cool lessons for my 6th graders on this.
Perhaps on my homepage I could add some fun sites.

Week 3 Thing 7

At our district inserivce yesterday, we watched a clip from Teacher Tube called "Shift Happens".
It really is an eye opener when you relate all this technology back to the classroom and the teaching techniques and styles that we use. I feel that it is our responsibilty as teachers, to incorporate the emerging technology into our lessons. Using technology is no longer just a gimmick, we as educators must embrace it and keep moving with it, or get left behind.

Week 3 Thing 6

Had fun with creating the trading card. In the old days, I would have our students make one after their biography research by using index cards. NOW I can show them how to do it by using this very creative tool. Here is my link: http://bighugelabs.com/photos/b5592ddd01cf27af9592bd41e0a2a9d0/deck8544036
The students could research their pets and then make a card with some facts. Or, I could have teachers reading their favorite books and then have them write a blurb and use for a bulletin board. I believe that I will come back to this cool tool.

Week 3 Thing 5 Cont....

Yeah, I finally did it. I guess after a long inservice day my brain is not working right.

Flotsam

This collection reminds me of summer days. Walking the beaches of Emerald Isle, NC. I use this photo to begin our book talk, for our first graders, It leads into a great discussion of all the things that they have found in the water.

Week 3 Thing 5

Tonight I published a picture to Flickr that I use for my First grade class when introducing the book "Floatsam" Trying to get in on my Blog. Getting error message and not having DSL is trying my patience. Will need to check back.

Week 2 Thing 3 and Thing 4

Creating my avatar was fun. It was like playing with the old "Colorforms" The directions were easy to follow. Registered my blog with PA 2.0

Week 1: Thing 2

In reviewing the the 7 1/2 Habits, I discovered that the easiest for me was #2. Accepting responsibility for my own learning. I love learning and sharing what I have learned. I view each day as a learning experience.
The most difficult one is # 3. Viewing problems as challenges. I'm hoping that I can change my focus from the problems, to viewing them as a learning experience and embrace the challenge of creating a new positive experience. Believe me!! Traveling between three schools I have enough challenges to work from.

Week 1: Thing 1

Beginning my journey of Web 2.0 !!
